Counting down the new year with my decreasing platelets

I couldn't quite muster the energy to chase a frisbee today. Knuckled over when trying to cross over a drain. Swept by a wave of lethargy. It was later discovered that I was running a fever (yes... my butt was probed by a thermometer). Needless to say my parents took me to the hospital. After some blood tests, radiographs and a brief ultrasound...

This is what's happening to me. The picture shows a blood parasite called Babesia. More commonly known as tick fever. A parasite transmitted by ticks. My platelets are low and spleen enlarged. It has the potential to cause very severe disease requiring blood transfusions. It can be life-threatening. I am not generally squeamish about needles, but they gave me a very painful injection that made me cry. Hopefully I will get better soon. In the meantime, all I feel like doing is sleep. There's talks about more blood tests tomorrow. Mom continues to monitor my vitals, and that unfortunately involves more butt probing with the thermometer.

Are you good this year?

Happy holidays! This is my first Christmas without snow. I kind of miss kangeroo-ing in deep snow. There are however, lots more gifts and people this year. I even got my very own presents! A treat dispenser toy, rope toy and treats! Santa must know I have been good this year.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do

There are some uniquely Singaporean/Asian things I got to experience lately. Every week we would go visit Mom's parents. I guess they are my grandparents? There is a certain ringing sound from downstairs. Last week, I finally got to investigate. Turns out, it was an ice-cream truck! The traditional multi-flavored ice-cream comes wrapped in a slice of rainbow colored bread (or so they tell me. How am I to know without being able to see colors). I got to try some of the bread. Thumbs up!

A few days ago my parents came home with a very strong smelling fruit. It's so strong you don't even have to have a nose like mine to pick it up from far away. They call it durian. Apparently it is the king of fruits. I love it. I would love to eat it again... and again. Being in a new place with new cultures isn't so bad afterall.

This heavenly fruit is called durian?

Random

A list of random things that occured in the last 2 weeks.
1. Went to Bishan Dog Run today
2. I was made to wear very strange glasses at work. I guess it had been a slow day
3. A stone water buffalo sniffed my butt
4. I learnt to balance on a stationary skatebord. I think mom is trying to teach me a new trick
What random things did you do recently?

Cooped up

It's been a long week of work for us. Mornings are spent rolling on the bed until we absolutely have to leave the house. A short potty break and a car ride. I spend most of the day waiting for mom to finish work. Work life is different here than in Michigan. There was a grass patch in the old place where I get to release my daily craziness. Even if it is just for 10 mins. Over here, I don't get kenneled, but there is no such release. I spend my days curled up under the table waiting for lunch time (when I beg for food). I get more space to walk around here, but nothing beats running free. I always look forward to our days off and pray it'll not be raining. There is a perfect frisbee spot 10 mins drive from our place. Judging from my facial expression, you can see what I think about it.

2 more days to go before another frisbee day...

A beach life

I can get used to a beach life. I had an amazing time at Tanjong beach. I cannot help but drag mom and dad around once I leaped out of the car. Once unleashed, I kangeroo hopped for joy! We chased bumpers, swam and met other fur friends. Then i noticed a black ball floating in the water. Dad placed it on the sand for me. I tried to paw it, step on it and bite it. Couldn't quite 'kill' that ball. They call it a coconut. Strange. We had a little picnic with the family and a great evening. I enjoyed everything but the bath I got at the end of the day.

My first Pet Cafe experience

I visited a Pet Cafe for the first time in my life. Our original plan was to picnic at botanical garderns. We did so for an hour, then it started to rain. It seems to rain an awful lot on this Island. So we head down to iii Cafe. I made lots of doggy friends there. We were all off leash! Some doggy friends were a little more tentative than others. Mostly, everyone got along fine. It was an exciting and fun experience. I am looking forward to our next cafe experience.

We also checked out the new dog run. Though when I went the other day, there was no other fur friend. :( Makes me miss running around with Scout (my girlfriend in Michigan). Better luck next time? We took a picture with some Tin soldiers instead.

Fun in the Sun

I have come to realize on mom's day off, we get to go to the local park. I love it there. The only real downside is that I have to be on a leash... well most of the time anyway. We met a friendly golden and 2 tail wagging beagles. Wished we could all come off the leash to play. What's more? I found a good place to pakour! Hopefully no one will chase us away, because I really love jumping on and over things. Unfortunately, there are a lot more insects here. Today I got bitten by black ants. Ouch!

The other day I got the rare chance to stick my head out of the window. It seems like the weather is usually too hot for this here. In addition, there are lots of humans on motorcycles that weave between the cars making it more dangerous to pop my nose outside. I am slowly but surely getting used to the heat and regaining my stamina. Time to run run run!

Same but different

It is interesting living in Singapore. There are several things I have to get used to. Firstly, the heat and humidity. All that panting makes me so thirsty. I am drinking twice as much. Secondly, the people here seem to fear me. They stop in their tracks, approach cautiously or turn around and hurry away. I hear them whisper "wow, big dog". Do they not know I am only medium sized (and friendly)? Thankfully I've also met several strangers who stopped to say hi. That made my day.

We have a large park near our home (with killer thorny fruits they call durian) that reminds me of Thomson park in michigan. I think we will be going there a lot. There is a 24hour supermarket nearby to provide us with late night snacks.

Roughing it out

I am reunited with my pack! Man it has been hell of a ride. It started when a stranger drove off with me in a crate. I arrived at detroit airport. There was a lot of fussing with my crate. Stickers and cable ties were placed. Then I saw a giant metal bird. It did not run away as I approached. The humans placed me inside?! It must have angered the beast as it growled loudly and shook. It was a long time before I was let out. By then, I had soiled my crate. :( I spent a night at frankfurt animal lounge. Thankfully, i was fed and watered.

The following day, it was deja vu. I was shoved into another angry bird. I ended up at Singapore airport and was transfered to the quarantine station. I got visitors daily, but it was not until the 5th day before I saw mom and dad. I almost thought they had left me. After 10days, I was a free man.

I was introduced to our new den -a work in progress. Our pack roughed it out on sleeping bags. I am just glad to be home.

I'm leaving on a jet plane

I will be making the longest journey of my life. I will fly 4154 miles (6685km) tomorrow to spend a night a Frankfurt Airport Animal Lounge. Apparently I am too big for coach and have to be in cargo. :( I've got the largest airline crate possible, but it still feels so small. The lounge claims to have the world's most advanced animal station combines handling, animal coordination and veterinary services on 3,750 sq.m of space under one roof. I just hope they let me out for a potty break when we land. I absolutely hate urinating in my crate. There will be smells of other dogs, cats, horses and maybe even zoo animals! The day after (if I get any sleep) we will be flying another 6396 miles (10294km) to my final destination Singapore. All in all it will be almost a full day in the skies. I should probably collect those frequent flier miles. Following all that flying, I have to be quarantined for 10 days. What?! Thankfully it will be air-conditioned and my pack can visit. However, there will probably be no WiFi . Hence, my dear readers I may not be able to post for 2 weeks. Stay tuned, because I will give you all an update as soon as I can. I will try to keep a cool head about my flight (I know my parents are worried).

 Somewhat worried about my flight

On a happier note, today has been rainy and I spent my morning popping balloons indoors. We created a video of this. Below are screen shots of the action this morning, the video is more fun to watch.

Last rendezvous with my girlfriend

Little did I know this was our last rendezvous with my girlfriend Scout. I will miss her. Mom tells me we will be heading for Singapore next week. It sounds like a long journey and I am a little nervous.

I have uploaded a video of our rendezvous on my channel on YouTube. Blogger only supports a very small file size. This will be my very first youtube video.

Sense and sensibility at the dog park

We were at a dog park yesterday. I made fast friends with a 6 month old red pitbull (pictured below). She was a little shy at first, but warmed up quickly. Running, chasing and jumping in the hot sun makes us thirsty. Thankfully her dad brought water along and was kind enough to share it with me. We were soon joined by other dogs. I love going to dog parks. It is a great place to meet new friends. Sometimes we meet one that is overly nervous or dominant. Mom tells me to stay away and give them space. It is important to stay near your person and come when called. I typically seek a dog that has the same energy level as me. I love it when they can keep up!

There are plenty of websites with helpful guidelines for you and your owner to enjoy the dog park safely. Here is a simple and helpful one by the association of professional dog trainers.

If you are having problems listening to your owner in the presence of other dogs, here's a video that may help:

I hope you enjoy the next time you're at the dog park!

Goodbyes are the hardest

Yesterday was the official last day of my work. Looking back through this year, I have made a lot of friends. It has been a wonderful year for me. There's always lots of people to pet me at work. Mom's colleagues take their dogs to work at times and we get to play. I am glad to have known so many of them and will miss them dearly. I am still coping with the fact that I'll not get to see my girlfriend Scout (Merle border collie in the video) every week anymore. :(

ALS Ice bucket challenge

There has been so much fuss with the ALS ice bucket challenge lately. Seems like everyone from robert downey jr to bill gates have done it. Even my idol jumpy the dog has done it! I thought I'll give it a go. Afterall, I was nominated by fozzietheaussie on instagram. So here are my attemptS...

Melon Festival = melon ice-cream, food trucks and diving dogs.

This is our second year at the Howell Melon Festival. Lots to smell and see. There were melon ice-cream, corn dogs, swirly cheese potato chips, chicken steak, coney dogs, slushies, lemonades, burgers...*drool* There is a dock diving platform this year by the Ultimate Air Dogs! Running dogs, flying toys and a big splashes. It was so exciting I couldn't contain myself and cheered along my fellow canines.
